Zohr Offshore Gas Field, East Mediterranean, EGYPT

Project description

Zohr Offshore Gas Field, located in the Shorouk concession north of Port Said, is Egypt’s largest and most significant natural gas discovery. Identified by Eni in 2015, the supergiant field contains an estimated 30 TCF of gas, making it the biggest discovery in the Mediterranean and a transformational asset for Egypt’s energy landscape. Zohr was developed at exceptional speed, reaching production in 2017, and immediately shifted Egypt from gas shortages to energy self-sufficiency, enabling renewed export capacity through existing LNG facilities.

Operated through a joint venture of Eni, Rosneft, BP, and Mubadala Petroleum, Zohr continues to generate major economic benefits by attracting investment, creating jobs, and supporting Egypt’s role as a regional energy hub. The project is supported by key onshore infrastructure, including the Abu Madi natural gas treatment plant (5 MMSCMD) and the 7-km Abu Madi gas feeding pipeline (15 MMSCMD), ensuring efficient processing and delivery of Zohr’s output.

Conducted coastal and marine habitat surveys and ecological baseline studies, including shoreline mapping, benthic characterization, biodiversity assessment, and marine water and sediment quality analysis for offshore and onshore components.

Assessed protected areas, historical sites, and cultural heritage assets within the project area using GIS-based sensitivity mapping to identify and minimize impacts on sensitive receptors.

Prepared Environmental and Social Impact Assessments for the Abu Madi natural gas treatment plant and the associated gas feeding pipeline, addressing construction and operational environmental impacts.

Evaluated air quality, noise, vibration, soil, groundwater, and operational risks, and developed mitigation measures along with environmental management and monitoring plans.

Implemented stakeholder consultations, technical coordination, and regulatory documentation as part of a scope subcontracted to D’Appolonia SAE, ensuring alignment with the technical requirements defined by D’Appolonia SAE.
